Why I bet on being small

John Kramarczyk
BlackArray

When I started BlackArray, more than one person told me I was leaving leverage on the table. Why stay a company of one when you could hire, scale, and chase bigger work?

Because in this business, size and value are not the same thing, and for the work I do, they can even pull against each other.

A partner bringing me onto a team is not buying headcount. They are buying a specific thing: senior AI and machine learning judgment they can drop onto a hard problem with almost no ramp and almost no risk. Every layer I would add between me and that work would make me slower, pricier, and easier to replace with the next staffing shop. Staying small keeps the thing they are actually buying undiluted.

There is a structural angle too. As a small business, and a minority-owned one, I help partners meet small-business and supplier-diversity goals they carry on nearly every award. That is real value I can only offer by staying small. Growth would quietly erase it.

So the bet is this: be the sharpest single tool on the team, not a dull second toolbox. So far, I like the odds.
